TCP and Torrent Trackside provided Network Rail with 25 portable Ecolite TH200 hydrogen fuel cell light towers which were positioned at various site locations along the Oxford Corridor.

Project Summary 

Significant railway enhancement work in the Oxford area has been taking place which culminated in a 23 day blockade of the railway in the Oxford area in July 2018. Working 24/7 and in close proximity to residential properties the Network Rail Western Enhancement Delivery team knew it had to make every effort to keep noise down to a minimum.

The solution 

The Western Enhancements delivery team had worked with TCP previously in the development of a hydrogen lighting solution. TCP and Torrent Trackside, work together to promote the Ecolite hydrogen fuel cell light tower to the rail industry as way of reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution.

It was therefore recommended that Network Rail needed the Ecolite TH200 which would give them a 200W led output and longer run times. This hydrogen fuel cell light tower, which is virtually silent in operation, would also help Network Rail’s Western Enhancement Delivery (WED) to reduce noise pollution within the residential area whilst work was being carried out at night over a five-week period.

The results 

TCP and Torrent Trackside provided Network Rail with 25 portable Ecolite TH200 hydrogen fuel cell light towers which were positioned at various site locations along the Oxford Corridor. Collectively, the units which have been designed to carry four cylinders of hydrogen gas, delivered an average of 7hrs of LED light each working night over a 5-week period. During the project, a total of 122 cylinders of H2 gas were used providing a total energy saving of >19,000 kWh and the elimination of over 8 tons of CO2, when compared to a modern diesel light tower.
