Twenty of Youngman Group’s Ecolite lighting towers were trialed at the recent Glastonbury Festival in the UK as part of the festival’s efforts to become the world’s first major carbon neutral rock event.

The Festival normally uses around 16000 l of fuel for its 175 rented towers over the five days of the event. Youngman says its Ecolite is approximately 75% more efficient than traditional 1000 W lighting towers - by using energy efficient ceramic discharge metal halide technology combined with patented prismatic lenses on the lamps.

Youngman claims that Glastonbury would have saved 63 t in CO2 emissions if it had used Ecolites throughout the festival.

Following the festival the 20 towers were acquired by TLC (Tower Light Company), which specialises in renting equipment to the festival. Asked about product development plans, John Bungay, business development director at Youngman Group, tells IRN that the company is focused on promoting the benefits of its existing products; “Rather than rethinking the wheel, we think our product offers significant benefits over traditional towers, even the newest versions. We’re saying use less fuel, have less CO2 emissions and get the same light.”

He acknowledges that switching to new towers can be a big decision for larger rental companies - involving major investment - but says that many smaller independent rental companies have started to build up fleets of Ecolite machines.

He says some users are simply focused on the most ‘green’ solution - fuel savings and CO2 reductions - and there is another group who like the Ecolite safety system that prevents the tower being towed or moved while the mast is up. “Safety, sustainability and fuel cost savings are the main drivers - and the first two are the most important”, says Mr Bungay.

Material movement and landfill costs were all saved, together with the satisfaction Mr Miller achieved in recycling his old crazy paving. Gareth commented “I could hardly believe my eyes when we managed to manoeuvre this Crusher into position with no damage to door frames or paintwork- a great tool for a difficult access job that out performed my expectations”.

The TCP Ecolite has proved itself on both these fronts during trails and use over the past 12 months.

Mike Olivant (Eden Site Manager) says “The Ecolite from TCP shows that reduced carbon emissions are achievable without any compromise on performance, much effort has clearly been put into the design of the Ecolite”.

The Ecolite is aesthetically pleasing, easy to manoeuvre, fully bunded, and the low fuel consumption (just 0.5l/hr) allows for long intervals between refuelling (175hrs on one tank of fuel).

Mike emphasised that The Eden Project “would have no qualms in recommending both the product and TCP support and service to anyone”.

TCP MD Andrew Barker adds “For companies taking the issue of carbon footprint and sustainability seriously, TCP have put much effort and experience in producing a product that will reduce carbon emissions by a massive 80% in most mobile lighting tower applications in the UK and beyond. Added to this there are £000’s to be saved in fuel and refuelling costs by the adoption of the Ecolite lighting equipment”.

Due to this demand, TCP have enlarged their stock of Micro Crushers throughout all their depots to ensure they can meet the current nationwide requirements for crusher hire.

The Hi-C40 Micro Crusher is popular with local builders as it is small enough to fit through a standard gateway and ideal where site access is tight. Additionally the cost of the hire is offset against the cost of skip hire, cartaway costs, landfill taxes and the cost of having to buy in aggregate. Nationwide coverage is provided from our nationwide depot network.

Representatives from our partnering companies in Holland, Spain, Southern Ireland and the UK visited our offices and workshops to receive a demonstration and information on our range of products.

TCP have made some significant improvements to their original lighting tower - the Ecolite. It is lighter, more fuel efficient and offers more flexibility in lamp positions. The Ecolite boasts a 9.1 metre high mast that benefits from a fully hydraulic raise that uses biodegradable fluids. It features energy efficient ceramic discharge lamps and can run for 170 hours on one tank of fuel.

Brightlights - the lighting tower rental specialist based in Essex, were recently approached by a major road contractor to provide a temporary lighting solution for road works close to a major road junction in the South East.

The contractor had a requirement for the lights to operate for extended periods. Particularly to cover an extended weekend period in excess of 80 hours.

Brightlights recommended the use of the Ecolite from Taylor Construction Plant Ltd as the lighting tower that would meet their Client’s requirements with a capability of running in excess of 7 days on one tank of fuel. This is achieved by the use of ceramic discharge lamps providing a consistent level of illumination at a fraction of the running costs. As well as the massive run cost savings the need for expensive weekend call outs for refuelling was eliminated.

Ian Madder-Smith of Brightlights was pleased to be awarded the contract and was delighted with the reaction of his client. Who is not only enjoying the cost savings, but also commented on the improved quality of light provided by the TCP Ecolite’s Ceramic Discharge lamps - giving reduced glare and flicker free light.

TCP continue to look at improvements in the Ecolite and have achieved numerous further benefits for the end user that are available in the Ecolite MkII, which will be available in October 08.

Further reduction in fuel consumption, a new cross arm with gimbal mounted lamps provides for maximum flexibility in lamp alignment, and a robust Rotamolded base are some of the enhancements made.

Having trialled a TCP mini crusher on hire since the beginning of 2008, Group Tool Hire Manager Keith Hallam realised that there was a strong demand for crusher hire and purchased their own machine.

Keith said “With the introduction of Site Waste Management Plans, there is a big emphasis on environment issues and the need to recycle as much waste as possible on site. We had a look at our hire fleet and realised that we had a requirement for a compact crusher. Having trialled the TCP Hi-C40 over a period of several months, we took the decision to purchase our own machine.”

Keith is pictured with Phil and Simon from the Tool Hire department at Sidmouth, taking delivery of the mini crusher.

After first discovering the Hi-T500 mini dumper at the Bauma show in April 2007 Mark Sweibel and Pete Van Wout both directors at Otto, were keen to find out more. Previously, the Netherlands based company relied upon a small fleet of rival tracked dumpers but were quick to notice the impressive benefits of the TCP offering such as superior build quality and the economical Kubota diesel engine.

Otto is a specialist piling company and is frequently working on domestic sites where access is extremely limited and manoeuvrability is essential. The TCP mini dumper provides the perfect solution with an overall width of only 700mm it can easily pass through a standard doorway and with resilient nylon tracks can turn within its length.

Although there are a small number of tracked dumpers already available in the Dutch market Mr. Sweibel and Mr. Van Wout were so impressed by the TCP unit they wasted no time in snapping up the dealership for the entire Netherlands region.

TCP Sales Manager Joe Ambor, while visiting Otto in the Netherlands, commented “it’s really exciting to continue to widen the market for the Hi-T500 mini dumper into Europe and we’re delighted to welcome Otto on-board as our Dutch dealership”.

Tony Newman, Director of Didcot Plant said “We originally decided on the TCP machine due to two reasons - we are familiar with the economical Kubota diesel engines and also we liked the robust design - a must for any machine in our expanding hire fleet”.

Fellow Director Matt Tarrant added “We run a number of K008 Mini Excavators with the Kubota engine and the Hi-T500 works perfectly in partnership with this machine. The four ram design for lifting and tipping is also a big plus.”

Didcot are finding that their customers are really appreciative of the hi-tip facility, removing the need for ramps, etc and the 4kph tracking speed allows the job done to get done that much faster. This also explains why the machine has become so popular to hire companies and their customers alike.

Following the successful launch of the UK’s latest mobile lighting tower at the Executive Hire Show and Bauma 2007, Essex based manufacturer Taylor Construction Plant have now delivered the first batch of Ecolite’s to leading plant hire companies.

This state of the art unit has revolutionised the mobile lighting industry by setting a new precedent in terms of energy efficiency, most recently endorsed by winning the Innovation Award at the 2007 Essex Business Awards. The Ecolite delivers massive cost savings for the end user and a much reduced ecological footprint compared to previous market leaders.

Key to the Ecolite’s ground-breaking fuel savings are the energy efficient luminaries, which provide up to a 75% saving on existing equipment. TCP’s close consultation with existing customers and end users has been responsible for an array of new features providing ecological, safety and user benefits, which cumulatively have resulted in a unit that will meet and exceed all expectations.

A fully hydraulic single axis rotating mast uses eco-friendly water based fluids and is raised at the touch of a button. The slim line, lightweight design of the unit makes transportation a breeze and the economical Hatz diesel engine ensures compliance with the latest Euro 3 exhaust emission regulations. The large fuel tank provides a massive 200 hour run time and therefore reduces the frequency of re-fuelling. The unit has a fully bunded design in the form of a robust GRP canopy which can be supplied in most corporate colours.

Ace Plant of Milton Keynes was the first company to take delivery of the new machine. They took the first units from TCP in June 2007 in all white livery to compliment their large fleet of Amida AL4000 units.

Brightlights of Tiptree, Essex, who have a long standing relationship with TCP, took delivery in August 2007. Brightlights specialise in supplying mobile lighting equipment to the events industry in across the UK.

Cramo, based in Holland, who already operate a large fleet of TCP’s Hylite lighting towers took delivery of their first units in July 2007.

This is a tremendous achievement for Taylor Construction Plant Limited and provides a high level of recognition for the technical features designed into our latest manufactured product.

The 2007 awards ceremony, organised by the Essex Chronicle and Gazette Series of newspapers, was held on Wednesday 20 September 2007 at Braxted Park, Witham. The innovation category was judged by Dr Chris Dent and Dr Phil Darbyshire of the Future Systems Capability Department at BAE Systems. Our entry faced stiff competition from across the county and were delighted to conquer entries from DC Electronics - Motorsport Specialists (also of Maldon) and FMW Risk Services (who went on to win the Essex business of the year category) on finals night.

Having been shortlisted by the judges, TCP’s entry was further reviewed by Dr Chris Dent and Dr Phil Darbyshire of BAE Systems on Friday 20th July 2007. Managing Director Andrew Barker demonstrated the model and explained the ideas behind the concept from its inception two years ago. He also explained the innovative design features that have gone into the unit from the high efficiency lamps, to the mast sectioning and the main body which encompasses all the features and benefits that TCP were aware that their customers were demanding. TCP had to demonstrate that it had innovated not only in design and technology but also in customer care and end user satisfaction.

The Directors are now pleased to learn that TCP’s entry has now reached the finals of the 2007 Essex Business Awards, to be held at Braxted Park, near Witham on Wednesday 19th September 2007.
